What is a County Judge?
The Dallas County Judge presides over the five-member Commissioners Court, which is responsible for the county's budget and administrative functions. Key duties include serving as the head of the county's emergency preparedness, overseeing the Truancy Courts system, and proposing the county budget.
Administrative and Judicial Duties:

Commissioners Court: Presides over the Commissioners Court, which has budgetary and administrative authority over county government operations.

Budget: Proposes the county's annual budget.

Emergency Management: Is responsible for the county's disaster and emergency preparedness, including a 24-hour operation managed by the Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Truancy Courts: Oversees the Truancy Courts system, which handles truancy cases for several school districts.

Juvenile Department: Oversees the operation of the Juvenile Department and carries out specific actions allowed by statute.

Elections: Receives and canvasses elections.

Other Duties: Oversees the historical commission, child care and early childhood education initiatives, and refugee affairs.
Legal Requirements:

Although not required to be a lawyer, the county judge must be well-informed in the law.

After being elected, the judge must complete 30 hours of judicial education during their first year and 16 hours each year thereafter.
